Forward written by Catherine Jumba

My name is Catherine, and I am the founder of  Touch Life Children Centre. We are located in Korogocho, one of the slums here in Nairobi where most children are vulnerable due to HIV/AIDS. Most families are headed by women who are single, and mostly infected with the virus.

One day a fire occurred, and killed three children of the same family. Their mother had locked them up in the house in order to go look for odd jobs. She believed the children were safe from cases of kidnap and rape -only to die a horrible death.

I was really touched, and I empathized with the situation. This is just one example of many tragedies including kidnapping, accidents through motorcycles, buses and many more that put our children here at risk.

I thought it would be better if children here in my community could have a Centre to care for them while offering resources to meet their educational, spiritual, emotional and physical needs. It is now a reality that mothers, and even fathers are finding it easier to seek employment while their children are in safe hands here at our centre.

Offering Writing for the Soul Workshop™ has been one of the best decision’s I’ve made for our students. The stories we’ve collected from our students for The Touch Life Project is helping me to realize the dreams of this angels. I can’t do it alone. Your purchase of this book does so much more than you can even imagine. Thank you.

One of the responses from my kids:

“I am Setrick Kisaka, a youth in Nairobi.  I am glad to be able to attend this workshop. I give thanks for Vincent Omondi and Eric Jones, who made this possible. They have opened my mind, and given me another view on life. This workshop encourages me as a youth to share how I feel while living in such an immoral generation. For the first time, it feels like someone actually cares about how I feel inside.”

A Touch Life Project Vlog:

“Every story in this book is a container of its own.  The stories are edited with a light hand to maintain the unique, sometimes raw, feeling and voice of the author.  These containers are the foundation of coping with some of the toughest situations our youth face today.

For these young authors, these containers, their stories were much like opening their personal Pandora’s box – and even if you don’t quite see the bottom of the container – you know that there is hope.” -Eric L. Jones, Sr., Developer of Writing for the Soul Workshop™

About The Touch Life Project:

The Touch Life Project is the second release in our Stories of Hope series. For participants who submitted their stories while attending our Writing for the Soul Workshop™ program in Korogocho, this was an educational, spiritual and emotional journey for them.  True to the series, this is a compilation of heart wrenching, and liberating short stories written by students at Touch Life Children Centre.

Vincent Omondi is our Community Coordinator on the ground in Kenya. Through his efforts, other young adults were able to access our unique writing program. The stories collected in this book is what happens when we bring education and passion together in a way that offers permanent life changing impact. Many of these young writers developed a love of writing as a result.
